Food Ecosystem

Landscape

What already exists for each planned subsystem, open source and proprietary, before the prototypes here go any deeper. 23 services surveyed across six subsystems, 9 of them labeled open source (7 strictly OSI-conformant; Tandoor carries a Commons Clause resale restriction and RecipeSage is AGPL for non-commercial use only, both noted per entry), and 7 flagged as replicate-as-OSS candidates: proprietary services whose best patterns are worth rebuilding openly rather than cloning their whole product.

The honest gap: fridge inventory, meal planning, recipe kits and calorie counting all have solid open source options. Diet and health programs mostly do not. Diet has one small self-hosted project against two polished proprietary planners; health programs has zero open source entries at all. That is exactly where the replicate-as-OSS flags cluster below.

OSS open source, license verified against its repository. proprietary closed source. replicate pattern worth an open equivalent. Sources are tiered A (license text / repository), B (independent analysis), C (vendor's own page).

Fridge inventory (open app)

Grocy

OSS

MIT

Self-hosted web app for pantry, fridge and household stock: manual and barcode entry, expiry dates, chores and shopping list generation.

Gap: No values scoring or provenance linkage to what is actually in stock, and self-hosting is a real setup barrier for a non-technical household.

Already MIT-licensed and actively maintained; extend or embed rather than rebuild from scratch.

KitchenOwl

OSS

AGPL-3.0

Self-hosted grocery list and recipe manager (Flask backend, Flutter frontend) with real-time shared shopping lists and expense tracking.

Gap: Lighter on dedicated expiry-date tracking than Grocy, and again requires self-hosting to run.

Already open source (AGPL-3.0); its lean Flutter UI is worth studying, not re-implementing from scratch.

NoWaste

proprietary

Proprietary mobile app for food inventory: barcode scanning, expiry alerts, cross-device account sync, and recipe suggestions for items about to expire.

Gap: Cloud account required, closed data model, no values scoring or provenance, and free tier is capped at six lists.

replicate The account-synced, expiry-first workflow is a solid pattern worth an open equivalent; the closed cloud data model is the gap to fix, not the UX.

Fridgely

proprietary

Proprietary mobile app that auto-adds items by photographing a grocery receipt or scanning a barcode, then tracks expiry and suggests recipes.

Gap: Small independent developer, freemium in-app purchases, no values scoring or provenance, single-purpose with no meal-plan or diet integration.

replicate Receipt-photo auto-add is a real friction reducer over Grocy/KitchenOwl's manual or barcode-only entry; worth replicating openly.

Meal planning (open app)

Week planners that turn a recipe collection into a shopping list.

4 services · 2 open source · 1 replicate candidates

NameOSS / licenseCoverageGaps vs idealReplicate
MealieOSS AGPL-3.0Self-hosted recipe manager and meal planner: import recipes by URL, build a week plan, and generate a shopping list from it.No values scoring, provenance, or diet-profile awareness of what gets planned; self-hosting required.no

Mealie

OSS

AGPL-3.0

Self-hosted recipe manager and meal planner: import recipes by URL, build a week plan, and generate a shopping list from it.

Gap: No values scoring, provenance, or diet-profile awareness of what gets planned; self-hosting required.

Already open source; contribute upstream or extend rather than rebuild.

Tandoor Recipes

OSS

AGPL-3.0 with Commons Clause (no resale)

Self-hosted recipe manager, meal planner and shopping list builder with strong recipe-scraping import from external sites.

Gap: The Commons Clause forbids selling a hosted version, so it is source-available rather than strictly OSI open source, plus the usual lack of values scoring and provenance.

Code is already public and modifiable for non-commercial use; the resale restriction is a licensing nuance to note, not a gap to replicate around.

Paprika Recipe Manager

proprietary

Proprietary recipe organizer, meal planner and grocery list app sold per-platform (iOS, Android, Mac, Windows) with cloud sync.

Gap: Paid per platform, closed sync, no values scoring or provenance, no diet-profile sharing across apps.

Mealie and Tandoor already cover the same web-import-plus-meal-plan pattern openly; no distinct pattern here worth separately replicating.

Samsung Food (formerly Whisk)

proprietary

Proprietary AI-driven recipe discovery and meal-planning platform (160,000+ recipes) with grocery-integration auto-shopping-lists and Samsung Health sync.

Gap: Owned by Samsung with a hardware-ecosystem lock-in angle, closed data, no values scoring or provenance, no independent diet-profile contract.

replicate AI-personalized plans plus automatic grocery-integration shopping lists is a genuinely novel pattern not yet matched openly; worth an open, privacy-respecting equivalent.

Recipe kits (planned)

HelloFresh-style portioned, timed recipe kits, both delivery-commerce and open formats.

HelloFresh

proprietary

Proprietary weekly meal-kit delivery: pre-portioned ingredients matched to a printed recipe card with exact timing, available in Austria.

Gap: Commerce-locked to their own delivery and pricing, no values scoring or provenance beyond their own sustainability marketing, no diet-profile portability.

replicate The structured kit format itself (portion-exact ingredients plus a timed step card) is the benchmark UX pattern worth replicating as an open, printable format decoupled from their delivery commerce.

Marley Spoon

proprietary

Proprietary weekly meal-kit delivery service operating in Austria, with ready-made meals and a marketplace of pantry add-ons alongside recipe kits.

Gap: Same commerce lock-in as HelloFresh; no values scoring, provenance, or diet-profile sharing.

Same kit pattern as HelloFresh with no separately distinct feature; the HelloFresh entry already covers the replicate case for this category.

Cooklang / cookcli

OSS

MIT

Open, human-readable recipe markup language plus a CLI and embedded web server (cookcli) for parsing recipes into structured, machine-readable kit steps.

Gap: A markup format and toolchain, not a consumer meal-kit app by itself; needs a UI layer for a household to use it like HelloFresh.

Already open (MIT); its markup language is itself the reusable, already-free pattern for machine-readable recipe kit steps.

RecipeSage

OSS

AGPL-3.0 (non-commercial; commercial license available)

Collaborative, self-hostable recipe keeper, meal planner and shopping-list organizer as a PWA, with recipe sharing between accounts.

Gap: AGPL applies to non-commercial use only, commercial use needs a separate paid license from the maintainer; no values scoring or provenance.

Already open for non-commercial use; the collaborative recipe-plus-shopping-list pattern is usable as-is.

Calorie counter (open app)

Manual calorie and nutrient logs with daily totals.

OpenNutriTracker

OSS

GPL-3.0

Free, open source Flutter calorie and macro tracker focused on simplicity and privacy: no ads, no account required, no data collection.

Gap: Manual and barcode logging only, no values scoring or provenance link to what is being eaten, food database smaller than the commercial giants.

Already open source; its privacy-first, no-account design is the model to build on directly.

Waistline

OSS

GPL-3.0

Libre Android calorie counter and weight tracker built with Cordova, backed by the Open Food Facts database, no ads or in-app purchases.

Gap: Android only, no values scoring or provenance beyond what Open Food Facts itself exposes, smaller maintainer community than the OSS recipe apps.

Already open source and Open Food Facts-backed; adopt or extend rather than rebuild.

MyFitnessPal

proprietary

Proprietary nutrition tracker with a 20-million-item food database, photo-based meal scanning, and integrations across 40+ fitness apps and devices.

Gap: Closed data, subscription-gated features, no values scoring or provenance, no diet-profile contract shared with other apps.

OpenNutriTracker and waistline already cover manual and barcode logging openly; the differentiator here is a licensed food database, a data problem rather than a UX pattern worth replicating.

Cronometer

proprietary

Proprietary nutrition tracker with deep micronutrient analysis, tracking up to 95 nutrients and compounds, plus a professional tier for clinicians.

Gap: Closed data, paid Gold tier for full functionality, no values scoring or provenance link.

replicate Micronutrient-depth tracking is a pattern worth replicating; the OSS trackers here are calorie/macro-focused and comparatively thin on micronutrients.

Yazio

proprietary

Proprietary food, fitness and fasting tracker: AI-assisted food logging, macro tracking, intermittent fasting timers, and activity sync.

Gap: Closed data, subscription-gated, no values scoring or provenance, no diet-profile contract shared across apps.

The fasting-timer feature is a nice-to-have but not differentiated enough from the existing OSS trackers and Cronometer's coverage to prioritize replicating.

PANTS (Price and Nutrition Tracking System)

OSS

Apache-2.0

Self-hosted, open source nutrition tracker and analysis tool for ingredients and recipes, usable for average-meal diet planning.

Gap: Small single-maintainer project with a technical setup barrier, no values scoring or provenance, no polished diet-profile UI comparable to the proprietary planners.

Already open source (Apache-2.0); worth adopting or forking directly given how thin the OSS options are in this subsystem.

PlateJoy

proprietary

Proprietary personalized meal-planning subscription for specific health conditions (diabetes, PCOS, gluten intolerance) built from a ~50-field lifestyle survey, with nutritionist consults.

Gap: Closed, subscription-priced, no values scoring or provenance, and the diet profile it builds is locked to their own meal plans rather than a shared contract other apps can read.

replicate Condition-aware diet profiling maps directly onto the diet-profile contract this ecosystem needs shared across apps; no OSS equivalent exists at this depth, so this is the strongest replicate case in the subsystem.

Eat This Much

proprietary

Proprietary automatic meal-plan generator matched to diet type (keto, vegan, paleo, Mediterranean), calorie and macro targets, with grocery-list and Instacart integration.

Gap: Closed data, subscription tiers, no values scoring or provenance, no portable diet-profile contract.

Same macro-and-diet-type auto-plan pattern as PlateJoy; the PlateJoy entry already covers the replicate case for this subsystem.

Health programs (open app)

Virta HealthproprietaryProprietary clinically supervised type 2 diabetes reversal program combining a carbohydrate-restricted nutrition protocol with continuous remote care from physicians.Requires licensed medical supervision and works with health plans/employers rather than individuals directly; closed, no OSS equivalent, no values scoring.no

Noom

proprietary

Proprietary behavior-change weight and health management program combining a CBT-based curriculum with full-time human coaches, now extended to diabetes and menopause.

Gap: Closed curriculum, paid coaching model, no values scoring or provenance, no OSS equivalent exists in this subsystem at all.

replicate The CBT-based behavior-change curriculum structure is the strongest pattern here and there is no OSS equivalent; replicate the coaching-content structure, not the paid-human-coach labor model.

  • Noom [C] accessed 2026-08-24

ZOE

proprietary

Proprietary personalized nutrition program using at-home lab testing (continuous glucose monitor, stool microbiome sequencing, blood-fat response) to score foods 0-100 for an individual.

Gap: Depends on paid lab testing and a proprietary algorithm trained on 300,000+ profiles; closed, no values scoring, no OSS equivalent possible without the underlying research dataset.

Depends on proprietary lab testing and a predictive algorithm trained on a large private dataset; this is a data and testing moat, not a software UX pattern that can be extracted and replicated.

  • ZOE [C] accessed 2026-08-24

Virta Health

proprietary

Proprietary clinically supervised type 2 diabetes reversal program combining a carbohydrate-restricted nutrition protocol with continuous remote care from physicians.

Gap: Requires licensed medical supervision and works with health plans/employers rather than individuals directly; closed, no OSS equivalent, no values scoring.

A clinically supervised medical-care model needs licensed clinicians to operate; not a software pattern this ecosystem can extract and open-source.
